Infectious Disease
Integrated Dx utilizes PCR or Polymerase Chain Reaction over standard culture. PCR testing is faster, more sensitive and more accurate than culture. Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAATs) including multiplex PCR have changed the landscape of clinical microbiology. They play an important role in diagnostic testing as they simultaneously detect several different pathogens associated with similar and overlapping clinical symptomatology. These panels belong to a category of testing known as culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs), which are tests that detect pathogens without the need to grow and isolate them in culture.
Key Facts:
- PCR can simultaneously detect several different pathogens.
- No need to grow and isolate pathogens in a culture.
- Shorter turnaround time.
- UTI PCR results have >90% accuracy identifying organisms.
